Rosie's Latest Escapade

As you all know, we were granted overnight visits from Friday until Sunday evening until our paperwork comes through and the kids can be permanently placed with us. Because of Rosie's pneumonia/asthma issues last week (requiring 3 nights of hospitalization) foster care and adoption workers both said for her to be discharged to us and take her home with Teresa on Sunday evening. Fine, no problem. Until she decided to climb a tree Saturday afternoon...And fell...4 feet...Landing with her arm in the wrong position thereby necessitating a call to 911...Subsequent ambulance transportation...And surgery this morning to screw her arm back together. Seriously. Because leaving Steve with 6 kids last weekend wasn't enough. We had to do it this weekend also.

She's actually doing fine. We were discharged around 4pm today. The force from the fall broke the front surface of her upper arm but left the back surface intact, kinda like the bone bent, near the elbow but above the growth plate. The orthopedic doctor said the pinning was necessary to stablize the break, that they could have manipulated it together, but with out surgery it wouldn't have stayed until it heals fully. She's back at her foster care home tonight, but still out of school for another day or two, until she doesn't need pain control during the day. I'll be taking her every two weeks to the orthopedist for check ups and I am assuming x-rays to determine the healing factor. Generally 4-6 weeks in a splint.

Even though we went downtown to the children's hospital this time instead of the local hospital (for better availability of specialists), the room and nursing and doctoring (for the pneumonia) at the local (but with sometimes less competently perceived care) was a completely higher standard. The food was somewhat better downtown, so that was good. (Although that's not exactly saying much.)

Anyway, glad to be home. I now have a good four and a half days to prepare for the next onslaught.
